WhatsApp currently only allows you to share media and text updates on your status.
WhatsApp’s Status Feature – The version of the app with the Stories feature that we see on other platforms like Instagram – is largely limited to photos, videos and text updates. However, it looks like the platform will soon allow for some more flexibility when it comes to its status updates by adding support for voice notices.
VoiceNote status updates, or ‘Voice Status’ will allow users to record instant audio notes and share them on their status tab, as users can send voice notes to other WhatsApp users in the chat window. These voice status updates will allow users to easily record and share important updates with voice prompts, or a set of instructions with their contacts.
A new report from WABetaInfo shows that the feature is currently in development and will come with future updates. A screenshot also shows what the implementation will look like. Check it out below.

The image shows that a dedicated voice button will pop up when you add new status updates. This button lets you record voice notes to go to and share voice statuses. Voice status updates will likely follow the same privacy settings as your regular status updates. This means that your voice updates will not be visible to people who do not have access to your regular status updates. The visibility of these updates will depend on how your privacy settings are tuned.
Note that there is currently no timeline for this and this feature will come first for beta users. WhatsApp will then bring this feature into the stable app when any bugs are eliminated. This can take weeks or months, so don’t hold your breath over the upcoming feature.
