China’s universities and research institutes are in high demand for the computing chips produced by Americans to power their artificial intelligence(AI) technology.
But now Washington has banned the export of these chips to China, according to Reuters.
However, U.S officials ordered the supply of Chips to china, as the U.S. chip designer Nvidia Corp said last week.
Moreover, he also added that the export of A100 and H100 chips is now restricted in China. Not only this company but the other company Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) also does not export their advanced AI chip MI250 to China.
However, the U.S does this hinder the technological development of China as the result of the dispute between them on Taiwan. And Taiwan is the center of all the major chip firms including Nvidia.
However, chined named this strategy an attempt to stop the technological development of the rival.
While A100 chips are in high demand in China’s important research institutes.
As one tender shows that Tsinghua University, last year spent above $400,000 on two Nvidia AI supercomputers. Each of These AI supercomputers power on four A100 chips.
Moreover not only does this university demands these American chips but the Institute of Computing Technology, also spent over 250,000 on A100 chips.
In addition to these two universities, The school of artificial intelligence at a CAS university also spent over $93,000 on Nvidia AI supercomputers.
These are the biggest research centers and institutions where American Developed AI Chips are in high demand along with other institutions at District and provincial levels.
So this shows that they are suffering from the shortage of the American developed AI chips.
However, None of the research departments has responded to the request for comments. Nvidia Inc is also not responding to requests for comments.
Is there any alternative to the High demand for American Chips?
Currently, there is no alternative to American-developed AI chips. But some experts say that Nvidia chips can be replaced readily by Chinese chipmakers. The buyers can replicate their processing power by using multiple lower-end chips.
